After the Trump assassination attempt, Democrats decided to tone down their language and put all the perfectly valid but inflammatory rhetoric about fascism and destroying democracy aside, replacing it with the far milder pejorative, “weird.”

The questioner is 100% correct that the word is being used widely, from Kamala Harris, to potential VP picks, talking heads on the news, and certainly by Internet commenters like me. Picked this gem from X:

And it trends because it’s not only eminently true, but it just feels good to say. It brings clarity the to the problem. We don’t have to decide whether Trump is crazy, or just playing the part. We don’t have to decide whether or not Trump actually believes the 2020 election was stolen. We don’t have to argue about the context of “blood bath” or “dictator for one day.” It’s all just weird.

Trump and his Hannibal Lecter, electric shark boat and waterless dishwasher is weird. What Trump said about COVID and bright lights was weird. His tax policy was weird. His dalliance with a porn star and covering it up was weird. Telling Christians they don’t need to vote in 4 years is weird. Trying to change the debate rules is weird. It doesn’t matter if the Department of Justice is weaponized or not — what Trump is charged with doing is weird.

Even if presidents are immune from criminal prosecution, they can still be called weird and the Supreme Court can’t do a thing about it. (The Supreme Court is weird too.)

Trump is the weirdest major party candidate in over a century and maybe of all time. That anybody would vote for this weirdo is just plain weird.
